There is no more agonizing a decision than to admit that your situation is hopeless.
(This photo was inspired by high school pals Steve Swisher and Brad Freeman, who had a penchant for figuring out their next chess move with a finger placed lightly yet firmly on top of the piece. In spite of their inspiration for the pose, it was usually I who was in the hopeless situation.)
